Phlox

Phlox albomarginata
The distinctive, congested foliage is better visible in this than in the next. This came from Roger Barlow at Beaver Creek Alpines--amazing purveyors of the very best.

Phlox albomarginata

In this shot it could be any one of two dozen western phloxes (they do look a lot alike in bloom, I confess...

Phlox alyssifolia v. abdita
Another gem from Roger: a wonderful pink shade. Growing in my rock garden. Hope it spreads slowly!

Phlox alyssifolia in a trough
One of several clumps we grew from seed collected in South Dakota (Black Hills)--all pretty white. Wonderful congested clumps of foliage in the trough.

Phlox amoena SC Kentucky
A photograph taken last April in Kentucky, near the Cumberland river...these were prolific in the clearings under power lines where the woody plants are cleared. Makes you wonder what they did before the white folk. The botanist who showed these to us tells us that the power company is thinking of spraying under powerlines with herbicides...Sheeesh.

Probably extinct, the miniature sport of Phlox 'Arroyo'--which was developed and maintained for years by Homer Hill--a great nurseryman and friend, who's also no longer with us..
